Bill Currier asked me to post this ride report to the web for him.
Georgia Mountain Rally – Ride Report
“We don’t need no stinkin’ highways” – by Bill & Susan Currier
5-02-2013, Thursday afternoon, 3pm, 75°, we took off from Greenwood, IN on our 05 K1200LT. We headed south on 135 all the way to the KY state line at Brandenburg, KY. We then proceeded on 144 near Fort Knox to Elizabethtown for the night.
On Friday, we rode 61 through Greensburg, Columbia and Burkesville KY into TN. In Tennessee , we rode on route 53 around the Dale Hollow Dam, onto TN 52. We picked up Route 84 in Livingston to 68 to Tellico Plains. We then rode on our favorite road; The Cherahola Skyway which is a spectacular stretch of road through TN (~20 miles) into NC (~15 miles), ending at Lake Santeetlah in Robbinsville, NC. The road twists and sweeps up to an elevation over a mile high with breathtaking views of the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests. The temperature dropped 20 degrees, but the rain held off.
From Robbinsville, NC, we meandered south on route 129, 141 and 69 in NC to the GA state line and a few minutes later we were at the Georgia Mountain Rally in Hiawassee, GA. We registered, wandered around eating chili and meeting up with old friends (we lived in the Atlanta area for 12 years, 7 as BMW riders). We retired at the Holiday Inn (camping was included; however our camping days are behind us).
On Saturday, I attended two seminars: Hawk’s Code of the Road and Stayin’ safe. I won a great door prize, a Kermit Hi Viz Duffel Bag. I took a spin on the BMWMOA Smart Trainer. Saturday evening we cooked our own steaks over the coals and were entertained in the music hall with live entertainment.
Sunday we headed back, riding between the rain drops. This time we took route 64 to 68. The southern portion of 68 is very twisty! We enjoyed BBQ in Tellico Plains. As we left Tellico Plains, I looked east and saw that the Cherahola was in the clouds. Been there; done that! Riding in the clouds is not as majestic as it sounds. We were glad that we rode it Friday!
We continued north through Sweetwater, Kingstown, Sunbright and Oneida TN. We continued on 27 in KY and spent the night in Somerset. Monday was mostly dry. In Stanford, the route numbers changed from 27 to 127. In Lawrenceville we jumped onto 151 and rode through towns like Bagdad and had a pit stop in Pleasureville, KY. 421 through Campbellsburg and Bedford across the Ohio River into Madison, IN. we continued on route 7 through Vernon onto 31 to Franklin then … we’re in our driveway.
995 miles, tons of smiles and no highways.
Sounds like a great weekend. Good report, thanks for sharing.
